Vehicle mount message sign - Full matrix

Technical specifications

The purpose of these specifications is to describe a vehicle mounted, traffic control warning unit, which shall consist of an all weather sign panel. The unit will be mounted on a vehicle and may be operated in moving or stationary positions. The unit shall be used on public streets and highways to direct and warn traffic of slow moving operations. The unit shall be operated from the vehicle electrical system.

1.0 Equipment Components

1.1 Sign Panel

Aluminum frame shall be 1” x 3” channel. Frame shall be heliarc welded. Back panel shall be .063 aluminum sheet riveted to frame. Aluminum frame and back shall be etched and finished with a minimum of two coats of non-reflective flat black enamel. The panel shall be a nominal dimension of 30” x 70.5”. Changeable Message Sign (CMS) shall be modular in design. Modular character panels shall be mounted to bus bars with no interconnecting wires. All power/data shall be carried by bus bars. The sign shall consist of (2) rows of (3) modular character panels.

1.1.1. Modular Character Panels

The display module shall consist of (4) LEDs per pixel. The body of the module shall be composed of UV-inhibited, high impact, ABS thermo plastic material and be environmentally sealed against contaminants.High-density modules shall have 96 pixels consisting of 384 LEDs. Themodular sign system shall comply with environmental standards set forth by SAE J1455.

1.1.2 Bus Bar

The bus bar shall provide mounting for modules and carry 12V DC andcommunications to each module. A vandal-resistant device shall secureeach display module onto the bus bar to withstand winds to 90 mph.

1.1.3 Single Board Computer (SBC)

Each sign shall be controlled by a single board computer providing power and communication inputs to the sign. The SBC shall provide necessary non-volatile memory for storing up to 200 sequences, built in photo cell and accept communication inputs from: manufacturer supplied hand-held terminal and a customer supplied Pentium ® PC.

2.0 Sign Panel and Power Tilt Assembly

If designated, a 12-volt DC power tilt unit shall be incorporated into the sign panel mounting frame to provide a method to remotely move the sign panel between the horizontal (travel) position and vertical (operating) position. The power tilt unit shall consist of a 12-volt DC, linear actuator, 250 pound capacity, equipped with automatic reset thermal overload and ball detent overload crutches. An actuator control switch shall be incorporated into the sign panel controller for operation of the power tilt from within the vehicle cab. The sign panel mount shall be constructed of 2” x 2” steel tube. Sign panel mount shall be of low profile design.

3.0 Truck Mount

The truck mount shall be constructed of 2” x 2” x 11ga. Steel tube welded in a “Z” configuration. This configuration shall accept the low profile sign panel mount. The truck mount shall mount to the top bed rails of a standard pick up truck, allowing installation of customer supplied cross bed tool box. The truck mount shall suspend the sign panel mount over the cab of truck with a minimum roof clearance of 10” to allow for customer installed roof mounted light bar. The truck mount should allow full use of truck bed.
